Things to Consider Before Adopting a Pet

Adopting a pet is an incredible experience, but it must be done for the right reasons and with full commitment. The SPCA is here to guide you in choosing the right companion, but it’s up to you to provide them with a forever home.

Your Home Environment
  • Is your home pet-friendly? Some animals need secure fencing or specific space requirements.

  • If you rent, does your lease allow pets?

  • Do you have enough outdoor space or access to safe areas for exercise?

  • If you live in an apartment or small home, a large, energetic breed may not be suitable.

Your Time and Lifestyle
  • Pets need daily attention, exercise, and companionship.

  • If you work long hours or travel often, will someone be able to care for your pet in your absence?

  • Dogs, in particular, need training, socialisation, and stimulation to prevent behavioural issues.

The Cost of Pet Ownership
  • Owning a pet comes with expenses, including food, vaccinations, vet visits, grooming, and emergency care.

  • If your pet develops a medical condition, are you financially prepared to handle it?

  • Pet insurance can help with unexpected vet bills, but it is an added expense to consider.

Long-Term Commitment
  • Many pets live for 10-15 years or more.

  • Are you ready for a decade or more of responsibility?

  • Will you still be able to care for your pet if your lifestyle changes (moving, starting a family, new job, etc.)?

Choosing the Right Pet
  • Research the breed or type of animal you want—each has unique needs.

  • High-energy breeds require regular exercise, while others may need frequent grooming.

  • Some breeds are more suited to families with children, while others prefer quiet, single-person homes.

  • If adopting a rescue animal, understand they may need patience and training to adjust to their new home.

Adoption is a Responsibility, Not a Trend
  • Pets are not gifts, fashion statements, or status symbols.

  • Animals need love, structure, and stability.

  • If you’re adopting on impulse, reconsider—animals are not disposable.

During their stay in kennels, we take our animals for walks, let them out to play in exercise runs and give them enrichment toys to keep them stimulated.

Adopting a pet

The process

Adopting a pet is an incredible experience, but it must be done for the right reasons and with full commitment. The SPCA is here to guide you in choosing the right companion, but it’s up to you to provide them with a forever home.

Visit the SPCA

Come and meet the animals available for adoption. Our team will help match you with a pet that suits your home, lifestyle, and experience level.

Complete an Application

You will need to fill out an adoption form and answer questions about your home environment, work schedule, and experience with pets. This helps us determine if the pet you’re interested in is the right fit.

Home Inspection

To ensure the safety and well-being of the animal, an SPCA representative will visit your home. This is to check for secure fencing, suitable shelter, and a safe space for the pet.

Adoption Fee & Paperwork

Once approved, you will pay an adoption fee that covers sterilisation, a microchip, deworming, first vaccination & and a collar.

Dogs: R1400
Cats: R800

Take Your New Pet Home

After finalising the paperwork, you can bring your pet home and start your journey together. The SPCA remains available for advice and support to help your pet settle in.
