What are the costs involved in adopting a cat or dog?

Why do you do home checks before adoption?
Home checks help us ensure that the environment is suitable for the animal you wish to adopt. We look at safety, space, and whether the breed’s needs can be met.
Why are adoption fees necessary?
Adoption fees help cover the cost of veterinary treatment, food, and care while animals are at the SPCA. It also includes sterilisation and vaccinations, which are critical for responsible pet ownership.
Can I adopt if I live in a flat or rented property?
Yes, first make sure pets are allowed where you stay. We will do a home check to determine whether your home environment will accommodate the kind of pet you’re applying for.

What if I can no longer care for my pet after adoption?

My pet is lost. Can I check if it’s at the SPCA?
Yes. You’re welcome to visit the SPCA during office hours to see if your pet has been brought in.
Can I surrender my animal to the SPCA?
Yes, you can. We appeal to the public to bring animals in themselves if possible. There is always someone available to receive animals, 24/7.
How much does it cost to make use of your boarding kennels for my dog?
R120 per day.
Important: Vaccination cards must be up to date and must be presented at check-in. Please ensure that your pet’s kennel cough vaccination is current.
I’d like to volunteer. What is the process, and when can I come?
You’re welcome to volunteer during office hours. Please visit our office to find out how you can help.

Please note: Sterilisations are done on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Your animal must be booked in the day before.
Do you have a vet on-site? What services do you offer?
No, we do not have a full-time vet on-site.
However, we do offer the following:
• Sterilisation (dogs and cats)
• Microchipping
• Deworming
• Vaccinations
• Monthly flea and tick protection (NexGard)
How much does deworming cost?
R30 per cat or dog
What does NexGard cost (monthly flea & tick protection for dogs)?
Price depends on your dog’s weight:
• 2–4kg – R120
• 4–10kg – R130
• 10–25kg – R170
• 25–50kg – R200
What is microchipping?
A microchip is a tiny electronic chip (about the size of a grain of rice) implanted under your pet’s skin. It contains a unique number that can be read with a scanner and is linked to your contact information on a national database.
Note: This is not a GPS tracker, but it helps animal welfare workers reunite lost pets with their owners.

What does an SPCA Inspector do?
Inspectors investigate cruelty complaints, rescue animals in distress, and enforce animal protection laws. They also carry out inspections of domestic, farm, and exotic animals to ensure proper care.
